Tidal streams in a MOND potential: constraints from Sagittarius
نویسنده
چکیده
We compare orbits in a thin axisymmetric disc potential in MOND to those in a thin disc plus near-spherical dark matter halo predicted by a ΛCDM cosmology. Remarkably, the amount of orbital precession in MOND is nearly identical to that which occurs in a mildly oblate CDM Galactic halo (potential flattening q=0.9), consistent with recent constraints from the Sagittarius stream. Since very flattened mass distributions in MOND produce rounder potentials than in standard Newtonian mechanics, we show that it will be very difficult to use the tidal debris from streams to distinguish between a MOND galaxy and a standard CDM galaxy with a mildly oblate halo. If a galaxy can be found with either a prolate halo, or one which is more oblate than q ∼ 0.9 this would rule out MOND as a viable theory. Improved data from the leading arm of the Sagittarius dwarf which samples the Galactic potential at large radii could rule out MOND if the orbital pole precession can be determined to an accuracy of the order of ±1o.

Are symmetric tidal streams possible with long-range dark-matter forces?
The unique dynamics of the tidal disruption of satellite galaxies is an extremely sensitive probe of longrange interactions between dark-matter particles. Dark-matter forces that are several percent the strength of gravity will lead to order unity changes in the ratio of the number of stars in the leading and trailing tidal streams of a satellite galaxy. The approximate symmetry of the stellar ...

The nature and origin of Lithium rich giant stars is still matter of debate. In the contest of our spectroscopic survey of giants in the tidal streams of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, we present the serendipitous discovery of 2 super Li-rich stars (A(Li)>3.54.0). Besides D461 in Draco, these are the only Li-rich stars known in a Local Group dSph galaxy. The high Li abundance a...

MilkyWay@home is a volunteer computing project that allows people from every country in the world to volunteer their otherwise idle processors to Milky Way research. Currently, more than 25,000 people (150,000 since November 9, 2007) contribute about half a PetaFLOPS of computing power to our project. We currently run two types of applications: one application fits the spatial density profile o...

متن کاملModified Newtonian Dynamics: success and problem on globular cluster scale
Many past attempts to kill MOND have only strengthened the theory. Better data on galaxy velocity curves clearly favor MOND (without fine-tuning) over cold dark matter. The usual critism on the incompleteness of classical MOND has spurred a Modified Relativity (MR) by Bekenstein. After outlining cosmology and lensing in MOND, we review MOND on small scales. We point out some potential problems ...
